The white comes. It does not arrive—arrival implies movement, a trajectory from one point to another. The white simply is, and then, by some logic that cannot be traced, it is here, occupying a space that was, a moment before, not its own.
At the center, a face emerges—not quite a face, but the memory of one, its eyes looking not at us, but into a distance that is not spatial, into a time that is not ours. The body does not end where skin should end. It spills outward, dissolving into a luminous mist, a whiteness that has no source and no destination.
And yet, over this formless radiance, there is a grid. Precise, mathematical, almost cruel—a system of coordinates that measures, maps, and domesticates the infinite. On its lines, small winged figures hang like specimens pinned to a collector’s board. Between them, dark, smooth shapes—eggs, perhaps, or stars—float in the spaces between order and chaos.
This is the central tension: the attempt to impose order on that which cannot be ordered, to measure the unmeasurable, to name the unnameable. The grid is the intellect; the white is the soul. Together, they are held in a fragile equilibrium that could shatter at any moment.
To stand before this painting is to stand at the threshold of one’s own consciousness. It asks: What are you, truly—the lines that define you, or the radiance that refuses to be contained?
The painting does not answer. It simply presents the question: What do you see—the order, or the light?
